Question.

Since many of you reading this are vegetarians, I would like to ask an important question:

Why do so many people say that poultry and fish are not meat?

I heard some coworkers talking the other day about being vegetarian. One stated that she was a vegetarian, but still ate fish. When asked why, she responded "Fish is poultry." Now you and I both know that fish is clearly not poultry, but why is it that fish aren't meat? Is it because they're cold-blooded? That at least has a fair amount of logic to it, but I don't understand the chicken argument. Is an animal not an animal unless it's a mammal?

Please discuss, especially if you're NOT a vegetarian. I want to understand this misconception, so that I know exactly WHY I'm punching people in the face.

Obviously! Chicken and fish grow from eggs, which are genetically inferior to seeds, making them closer to a plant than a cow. Are these the same people that won't eat turkey on thanksgiving?

What about turkey now?

Hmm...that makes sense about the eggs. But animal does not equal mammal. Mammal is simply a subcategory of the animal kingdom.

They'll eat chicken, but not turkey. I don't know, I'm an idiot. Vegetarians are weird anyway.. who wouldn't want to chew on a carcass?

I think they say that fish and poultry aren't meat because they think of meat as being red meat. I might be wrong; I'm just another clueless yet infuriated vegetarian. Damn people who think they're still vegetarians, even though they still consume things that can feel pain when you kill them.

Some people think that being vegetarian means not eating beef or pork. Just a misconception, I suppose.

The question I always get after someone finds out I don't eat meat is, "Do you eat fish?" I just say, "Is fish a vegetable?" That normally shuts 'em up.

If it has eyes and isn't a potato, I don't eat it. Done and done.

There are fish that live in caves that don't have eyes. Would you eat them?

Honestly, I don't care if fish live or die. Every Christmas I curse myself for not being able to eat shrimp. Damn these morals to living creatures!

I dislike humans more than any other living thing, so if they ever legalize cannibalism (when you consider population growth, they probably will within the next 100 years or so), I'll be first in line.

I must warn you; my meat is very stringy.

I wouldn't worry about it too much... if cannibalism isn't legalized for another 100 years, I'm sure you'll be like beef jerky.

"This jerked chicken is good. I think I'll have Fry's lower horn jerked."
"It's used to it! Woooo!!!"

The world is all cannibals hired to eat me.

I think I'd make a very succulent rump roast if someone decided to eat me.

Ryan, I think you'd be gamey like rabbit or duck.

Ben, you would be some sort of exotic game, like monkey or something.

Sherry, I think you'd be like a grouse or pheasant.

Aaron, I think you'd be veal or lamb.

RJ, you would be some wild game, like bear or boar.

I drank some cooking sherry last year, and concluded that it tasted like nuts. Therefore, the real Sherry must taste like nuts. Ben can verify.

Hathery said...

You never drank any cooking sherry.

The CDP. said...

Did too. At Erin's birthday party.

Hathery said...

Oh right...I do remember that. I had forgotten as Erin's drinking greatly overpowered that moment in my memory :) haha.
